Chapter 10

Reade circled the cabin a final time. The sky was filled with stars. Frogs jumped and croaked in the lake. A set of wind chimes played music in the breeze. Everything was in place. Jax Montero sat watch at the end of the driveway. He’d be there all night. Standing guard at the cabin were two new guys on his team, Mason Fox and Boone Carter. A fourth man would round out Linc’s new close protection team, but that guy wasn’t on duty. They would have to learn to work together. He wasn’t worried about that. They would either get along, or they would have to stay out of his way.

What he was worried about was going back inside that cabin and facing Bebe. He had been a damn fool, wanting to kiss her. He’d never been so grateful to be saved by the bell. He could jeopardize their safety if he even let his guard down for a moment. When this was over, if she was still interested and not deterred by the mundane of real life, he would ask her out on a proper date.

A date. What was he thinking? A woman like her would not be interested in his boring life, and he was done dating. Dating could lead to more. He wasn’t in the market for more. He wanted to keep moving. Settling down would choke the life from him.

He gave a quick nod to Fox and Carter before settling inside. He kicked off his boots and placed them beside the woodburning stove that had been lit. The curtains on the window had been drawn and clipped together with clothespins.

The bedroom door was half open. Bebe’s long legs were visible on the bed. She had changed into shorts. Her calf muscles flexed as she wiggled her toes. Something in his belly twisted. His fingers craved the feel of her leg again. When he had touched her earlier, the shock to his skin had run straight to his chest.

“Everything looks good outside. You have nothing to worry about. Get some sleep.” He leaned against the doorjamb, trying to keep a safe distance.

She eyed him over her black glasses perched at the end of her cute nose. She had wrapped a blanket around her shoulders and held a book in her hand. “Thanks, but I don’t know if I can sleep.” She held up the book. The cover looked like a thriller novel. Something he would read.

“Did everything work out on your phone call?” He didn’t want to go away just yet. She might be cold under that blanket, and if invited he would gladly climb under it and keep her warm, but he guessed the blanket was more of a shield. Probably from what happened earlier with that near kiss.

“Stuart wants me to come back to work. We have an opportunity to do some good and make him a bundle.” She removed the glasses and closed the book.

“Aren’t you going to make money too?” He shifted against the molding, trying to find a comfortable spot.
